The Three Parts of Biofutures:
Law, Biology, and Culture
Each of the three parts of Biofutures -- Law, Biology, Culture -- emphasize different aspects of contemporary biocommerce. The Law section discusses continuities and changes in intellectual property law that structure the shape of contemporary biocommerce; the Biology section focuses on the physiological, chemical, and technological processes that make biocommerce possible; and the Culture section examines ways in which biocommerce has been represented in film, novels, and recent art projects.
Though it is provisionally useful to distinguish between law, biology, and culture, we also emphasize in each part that contemporary developments in biocommerce cannot be understood within the context of a single disciplinary sphere, such as law, biology, or fields in the humanities. Rather, these developments must be understood within the broader context of the emergence of an "information society."
